Mmmmmm

I put a ham in the crockpot last night, and it's been cooking for over ten hours... it smells SO yummy!! I've been sitting here breathing in so deeply that I'm starting to have a head rush... can't get enough!!

My whole house is delicately scented by the odor of cola ham. Yep, that's right... cola ham. Diet Coke, to be more exact!! I've got a bag of baby carrots cooking in the small crockpot, and plan to pull out a can of potatoes to nuke and make mashed taters, make some spinach and some fresh biscuits to go with. Am thinking I may need to can some more potatoes this fall, but will have to go do a jar count.

Anyway, our plans for our ham is to have dinner today, then slice the rest, saving some for tomorrow night's dinner, when Mom will be joining us, and some for sammiches and put the remainder into the freezer in recipe portions. That way when I want to make a quick dinner or a casserole, all I gotta do is yank out a pack, defrost it and cook! Yay! Anyway, the scent of the ham is making me a bit delirious here... been craving a home cooked ham for MONTHS!!!

Milestones

It seems that our little ones don't stay little long enough. We've hit a couple of milestones at our house this week.

Yesterday, Hannah and I were doing school - we were working on the alphabet, and I started holding up flash cards, and she KNEW THE LETTERS!! That was the first time we'd worked with cards, however, she's been watching some Leap Frog dvd's, and they're really helping!! She is still having a bit of trouble with a couple of letters, and with her lisp, sometimes I'm not really sure what she's saying, but overall, I'm thrilled! Just waiting (impatiently) for our goodies from Rainbow Resource Center so that we can really get down to business. :)

This morning, after the babies got here, as Mom and I were talking, I looked over and Mazie was almost sitting up by herself!!! Then, after a few minutes, she managed to get her leg out in front of her instead of under her bottom, and then she did it! She sat up all by herself and balanced, too!! How cool is that? She's been getting up on all fours for a few weeks now, and yesterday, she even had her belly up off the floor, so she'll be crawling pretty soon. Oh, joy! LOL

Mmmm, lavender...

Lately, insomnia has been the name of the game at night for me. It's not fun, but is just plain frustrating. So as I was looking through the demo book for the new products that Avon is introducing, I noticed a lavender room & linen spray. Now, I've never really liked the scent of lavendar, but I thought, "Hm, lavender is supposed to be relaxing, so maybe it would help me sleep". With that thought in mind, I ordered a bottle.

The last couple of nights, I've been spraying some on my sheets & pillowcases, hoping it would help me sleep. Night before last, I just sprayed a little, and I still lay awake. Last night, however, I liberally sprayed the sheets & pillowcases then went to do some other things while it dried. Then I opened the window (the low was supposed to be in the mid-fifties), and crawled into my lovely scented cocoon.

I read for a bit, then finished my book. Being loath to get up to find a new book to read, I just lay there and thought happy thoughts. Took me about 20 minutes or so, but I went to sleep and had an AWESOME night!! I'm alert and in a good mood this morning, even though I didn't go to sleep until somewhere between 2am and 3am.

I'm going to resist taking a nap with my babies today and plan to go to bed around 10pm instead of 1am! Naturally, I plan to continue using the lavender, since it helped me so much last night. Hopefully it will continue to work.

It's not officially out yet, but if you'd like to order some of this faboo room spray, the link to my online Avon website is in the links bar to the right. It's called "Fresh Prints Lavender Room & Linen Spray". I think it'll be out either on the 13th or 27th of September.

Tagged!

I was tagged in a really cool way by Kim. She posted:

If your name starts with any of the letters in CHOCOLATE, I'm tagging you. Would you expect any different from me?

So here are my answers -

1. Are you craving anything and if so, what?
Watermelon!! Yummy, juicy, sweet, straight out of the field watermelon. I woke Peter up around 4am the other night to tell him I'm craving watermelon. When I reminded him to p/u some the next day, he started laughing and said he thought I was talking in my sleep. He got some but it wasn't nearly as good as we'd hoped - it was sorta grainy and not very sweet, probably because it's late in the season. :(

2. What is the weather outside, and do you wish it would change?
It's cool and LOVELY outside!! Good weather for sleeping with the windows open at night. We definately need rain, though. We've had some lately, but really need more.

3. What two websites do you think you will go to next after you are finished here?
A Cherry On Top to see what's new and MSN to check the news.

4. Do you wish you were somewhere else and if so, where?
Yep, in bed!! I totally need sleep!

5. Do you wish you were someone else, and if so, who?
No. At times in the past I wished I could have all that I have today, but never dreamed that I'd ever be where I am. I'm satisfied with who I am. I've gone through too much not to be happy.

6. Tag?
Anyone whose name begins with any of the letters in "SCRAPBOOKING". Please post in the comments if you've accepted the tag. Thanks!!

New cards

This is a Christmas card I created today. I did 18 of these. They're also stamped on the inside with a holiday greeting. All handstamped by me! All stamps from Stampin' Up!

Just finished this one. I'm doing ten of these, but can't attach the fronts to the card itself until Peter gets home and rounds the corners on the fold. I'm not strong enough to make it go through two layers of cardstock. :( Maybe it's time for a new corner rounder. Good thing I'm ordering some CM stuff soon! :)

Please leave me a comment to let me know you were here. I'm getting hits, just not a lot of comments. :)

Pet peeves and my holiday

Ok, so I'm listening to the Jerry Lewis MDA fundraiser marathon, and every time it bumps over to the local station, they keep giving the phone number, saying "oh", as in O, the letter, not 0, the number. When did "Oh" become a number??? ZERO is a number, O is a letter, and it doesn't take any more time to say zero than it does to say "oh". What really gripes me is that some of the folks I hear saying "oh" are highly educated!! So that's part of my vent.

The other part is hearing all these media personalities who, when speaking of the President of the United States, say "Mr. Bush". People, please!! The man was elected to the office, give him the respect of calling him "Mr. President" or "President Bush". You can bet your boopkus that if he was a democrat, they'd be showing him some respect! He's not just a plain "Mr." - he's our president! When hearing those same personalities speaking of Clinton & Carter, they invariably say "Former President Clinton" or "Former President Clinton". What special something did they do to get that added respect? They're democrats, people!! Whatever happened to unbiased news, anyway? It's almost enough to make me just get all my news online. Thank goodness for MSNBC.com!!

Now then, I'm finished ranting.

I'm working on my Christmas cards today!! Actually, I'm working on cards for some swaps I'm in. I never do Christmas trees, but the cards I'm doing today are featuring trees... I just thought the rubber stamp was way too cute not to use. It's not like I'm going to send them to my family, just doing them for a swap.

My friend Mona gave me a great idea the other day, though. She makes extra cards each time she does more than one card and puts the extras to the side for Christmas gifts! So by doing that all year, by the time Christmas rolls around, the recipient gets a nice variety of all sorts of cards to use throughout the year! How cool is that?? So I'm making extra cards. I won't have a huge stash for this year, but if I continue to do it throughout next year, I'm hoping to have some REALLY nice handmade card collections to give to my loved ones. :)

My sweet honey has been working mega hours this weekend. He worked from 12am to 8pm on Saturday, then worked 11pm Saturday to 8pm Sunday. Today he's pulling another 12 hour shift, and then goes back in at midnight tonight and works until 4 or so tomorrow. I miss him when he's working so much, but hopefully we'll have time to go out for lunch one day this week. :) He's actually grilling out today. On most of the summer holidays, a bunch of the people in various VOA houses get together to have a meal, and he's always the designated grill chef! He can cook some awesome food! So he's going to bring me a plate later on.

I haven't been outside our house in over a week, other than to go to the mailbox. I'm having some issues that sorta keep me tied to the house, not to mention that my allergies have kicked up into high gear. Ugh. Slept with the windows open last night, and boy, did I pay for THAT!! But it's all good. Love that the weather is a bit cooler than it has been. Looking forward to fall when the air gets nippy at night. I've been known to sleep with the window open when it's almost freezing outside. I just pile more blankets on the bed and turn the heaters off!

Now back to creating cards.... I'll try to scan in the completed examples when I get a chance. :)

Miscommunication

Yesterday, Peter brought home a box of Cheese Nips. He stopped in at the house for just a bit, so before he left again, he brought the box in from the car and Hannah went to the living room to get it.

She came back through the house yelling "Cheese Lips, Nene - Pete brought us Cheese Lips!!" Then she looked at me and said "Nene, you share your Cheese Lips with me?"

Then she turned to Monkey and said "Look, Amber! Peter brought us some Chicken Lips!!"

I got so tickled I almost had an accident! I love these girls! They're always good for a laugh. :D

And even though we worked on saying "Cheese Nips", to her they're still "Chicken Lips".

Sigh....

Progress!

I know I still haven't posted photos of my scrap space, but part of that is because all of our energies have been focused on the kitchen/dining area lately.

Peter got the end wall and the outside wall painted all the way over to the freezer. He did a few other things too. The paint looks ukky in these pics, but it's a funky apple/lime/spring green. It really opens up the room, and all the trim is white. Our accent color (cabinet handles/drawer pulls) is cobalt blue.

We're going to start working on the wall where the wooden cabinets are, and will be sanding and painting the cabinets white, as well as putting up new hardware and door handles. That will probably start tomorrow night. :) Here are a few photos to show what all he's got done.

I LOVE cooking in my improving kitchen even though it can be frustrating when everything's pulled into the middle of the room!! Eventually, we'll replace the ugly 1970's flooring with blue and white or black and white tiles. :)

No door!! This is where the door used to be going from the dining area to the hallway!! It's amazing how much more open it looks with it gone!

Hannah's got a lime green shirt and she sorta kinda almost blends in!! LOL Imagine a darkish lime green for her shirt, and you can sorta tell what color the room is. I tried to find a sample online, but couldn't find an accurate example. :(

Pete chilling out at our dining table. We've actually got a tablecloth and a plastic cover on it!! I've got a matching (huge) tablecloth that I got for a great price on clearance, and I'm planning to make a half curtain for the window in the dining room, and valances to match for the dining room window and the kitchen window. Just need to hit Hancocks to check out the pattern books for some ideas on how to do it. Did I mention I'm not a huge sewing person? Looks like I'm about to become one though!! The china cabinet we're going to refinish will eventually find its home along this wall so I can display my heirloom dishes & my Princess House collection. :)

So big!

She's been growing by the day, and is up on all fours rocking back and forth all the time, but she still can't sit up entirely by herself. She can sit up with minimal assistance, and loves being in the jumper and the exersaucer. Today she was sitting up after I changed her clothes and I just had to get a shot. She's looking at Peter (see last post), and he had his hand on her up until right before I took this picture. I'm so excited to see what new thing she's learned to do each day! :) She's just simply a living doll. I really love this baby girl.

Mazie's Playmate

Mazie has a favorite person at our house. She hangs with me and we play during the day, but the SECOND she hears "My Pete" come through the door, it's all over. She doesn't want me, only her big strong playmate. When he's home during the day, he takes care of her, because she's basically become his little friend. Yes, he changes dirty diapers and he feeds & burps her. It's so sweet to see.

I love watching the girls shower him with lots of love, and that makes me happy. He won't admit to it, but these three little girls are the sunshine of his life. And it makes life so much more wonderful.

Creative bug bit!!

I finally got out of my scrap funk today!! I got two layouts completed and into my album. I'm so excited!! I can almost feel my mojo coming back. Hopefully I can get a couple more completed tomorrow! :)

I've had this layout on my desk for two weeks and finally figured out how to finish it. The funky looking things at the top of the photo are strips of paper with words on them, that have ribbon loops stapled to them. Each word is something that describes aspects of her personality. The colors are black, royal and butterscotch, but they didn't show up well here. Grr. I really need to invest in a good digi!!

This is a quick layout I did tonight of Monkey climbing onto the piano bench at Gilbert & Sharon's. She worked and worked, but her perseverance paid off and she finally made it up! New technique for me was to ink my chipboard, then doodle on it and use UTEE to make it shine. I really like the way this one turned out.

What will they think of next?

This is a rather interesting, yet useless product that the corporate geniuses have developed to suck up the taxpayer's money.
http://spaghettiicecream.com/welcome.htm Oh, and make sure you check out the larger pics of their examples. Especially the asparagus!! LOL

My question is: Why on earth would you need to disguise ice cream as spaghetti to get a kid to eat it?? What kid have you ever met that doesn't like ice cream just as it is? I'll have my ice cream straight up in a bowl, without putting it through what's basically a plastic potato ricer first. :D

Out of the mouth of a babe...

Me: Amber, come here and let me brush your hair down. You're like a troll doll. You lay down and the back of your hair goes "Poof".

Hannah: When I lay down, my hair goes "poop" too.

Me: Your hair goes "Poop"?????

Hannah: Yes.

I was unable to respond because I was laughing too hard. :D

Tuesday, August 22, 2006

Hey, Pete...

Let's party like it's your birthday, baby!!

I'm so thankful for you!! I love you. More than you know.

Muahhhhh!!!!!!!!!

Monday, August 21, 2006

Ten things I learned today

1. Mazie can hold 2+ jars of baby food :D
And she likes avocado. :)

2. Monkey loves kidney beans (she picked all of them out of her taco salad and ate them first. LOL

3. TS Absolutely Almond Pound Cake, fresh sliced strawberries with Splenda and FF Cool Whip are a huge hit at my house.

4. Hannah likes taco salad much more than she did last time she had it.

5. It is possible to go do errands and come home to cook lunch. Way more satisfying than picking up fast food as well.

7. I have the most wonderful husband in the whole world. He emptied the dishwasher and made a pan of Jell-O for tomorrow while I made lunch, then then while I finished feeding the girls and loaded the dishwasher, he cleaned the bathroom and mopped the floor, all before leaving for work. :)

8. I'm loving the new-found domesticity in my life. It makes me happy and leaves me with a sense of fulfillment.

9. It's nice to spend time just puttering, doing things around the house with my sweet man.

10. Things go so much more smoothly when I'm not stressed.

Fly on the wall

So Hannah's chilling and all at once she starts coughing and coughing and coughing....

"Hannah, are you ok?"

Cough, cough, cough...

"Yes, I'm trying to get my bone out."

Cough, cough...

"It's a big bone."

Cough, cough, cough, cough...

"It's all the way up in my head, down to my tummy. It's in my mouth."

Cough...

Silence....

Cough, cough...

"I got a really big bone in my mouth."

Singing....

The reason she's saying that is when someone starts coughing around here, we ask if they have a bone in thier throat. Just one of those things. Sure didn't expect to hear this self conversation at 8:30 this morning!! LOL Kids - gotta love 'em!

For the carnivore in you...

Just got this in my inbox this morning. Of course, since I'm making a real effort to cook at home more, I just had to go read the whole thing. Quite interesting stuff. Not something I'd recommend, or actually do, but interesting anyway.

Amy's Blog Challenge

Get to know this scrapper...

1. Do you use older product that has been out on the market or do you strictly use new/hot merchandise?
I do use some older product, but don't do the whole sticker thing much anymore. I like the newer trends, but I can't afford to only use new product.

2. When you finish a layout do you put them in albums right away or do they lay on your desk/shelf for months?
Up until the last six months, all my layouts went straight into albums. Right now I'm in dire need of albums and page protectors, so I have several CM boxes that are full of layouts. Perhaps I need to see about creating a wishlist for Christmas!

3. Are there several adhesives used on each layout or do you usually stick to one?
My adhesive of choice is Tombow Monoadhesive. If I use heavier embellishments, or double matted photos, I use Glue Dots for the extra bond. I use metal glue for metal embellishments that need to be adhered directly to the page (use this rarely), and if I want something to be 3-D, I use Dimensional adhesive shapes. I use the Xyron for small items, or if I have lots of things that need to be adhered. I use Glue Lines for ribbon & fibers. Most of the time, though, you can find at least two open Tombow dispensers on my scrap desk while I'm working.

4. How often do you get to share your creative pages with people other than immediate family?
Twice a month at the crops I attend, but normally I post them on my blog and send them via email to friends who are not local. I just started posting some of my work on CMK, too.

5. How many people have you made into scrappers?
None that I'm aware of. I've helped influence a couple of people, but haven't managed to convince anyone to take up the art yet. :(

Cup, cup, cup, cup, of, of, of, of.....

That's a partial line from "My Fair Lady" (my favorite movie EVER). The "cup of" is referring to a nice, hot cup of tea. Or tay, however you wish to pronounce it. It's still yummy to my tummy.

I have spent the worst part of the past few days sick. Yes, sick. As in not having any fluids left in my body at all sick. Not remembering anything sick. Barely being able to make it from the bed to the bathroom and back again sick. Finally yesterday, my sweet, darling, wonderful honey-bun made me a cup of tea... OH YEAH!! And a slice of dry toast. It seemed to be the magic trick - I haven't worshipped the porcelain throne since! It is hereby my firm belief that a cup of tea will fix what ails ya.

I've been so addicted to Starbucks, and when he brought me a coffee home on Wednesday night, I took about three sips, and that was all she wrote. Ughhhh. It was good the first time, not so good the second. Kinda sorta killed the craving for me, you know? :D

So now I'm on my second (or is it third) cup of tea today. And I'm feeling (sorta) good. Perhaps I'll try to make a cup of tea my new substitute for Starbucks. I know it sure would be less expensive, anyway!! :)

Feeling my age...

Might get in trouble for this post, but oh, well. :D

It struck me this morning that I'm definately not as much of a spring chicken as I'd like to think. Case in point:

Emerald turned 19 a few days ago. Where did the time go? Seems like yesterday she was my baby, and now she's a very grown-up young lady!

William turned 17 last month. It's so odd seeing a young man now instead of a boy when I look at him. Wasn't he just a little guy with big brown eyes and the best hugs? When did he grow up??

My wish for both of them:
That they go on to get a good education and find their perfect niche in the world.

That they be a good, upstanding, productive member of society and find happiness in whatever they choose to do.

That someday they'll realize just how much I do really love them. And how much I always have.

That if I could change the past, I would do so in a blink of the eye.

Three Lil Monkeys

This is one of my favorite LO's from the past weekend. For some reason, I can't get the LO to scan in right, and it looked awful when I took a digi pic of it, so here's a totally wonky stitch job on it. Enjoy! :)

Insomnia and Sweet Tea

What person living in the Deep South doesn't appreciate a nice tall glass of sweet tea to take the edge off of a hot summer's day? Certainly not me! So with my dinner tonight, I had a glass of sweet tea - something I only have maybe once a week, at most. Well, apparently I'm getting older, or the tea is getting stouter. Whatever it is, here I sit, unable to sleep at 3:20am.

I went to bed at 10:00pm and woke up shortly before midnight, when Peter got up to go to work. Well, that was it. Haven't been able to go back to sleep since. Read half of a book - finished it, in fact. Got up and wandered around the house, checking locks, thinking that perhaps my obsession with making sure everything's locked up was what was keeping me from slumber. Not!!

Checked emails and my favorite message boards. Read some online newsletters (the new Basic Grey - YUMMY!!), and still - here I sit, in the dark. Only light is the glow of my laptop screen and the light in the hallway.

I'm so tired, and my babies will be here around 7:15 - 7:30am and I'm unable to sleep. Arghhhhhhh This is so frustrating! Last week it was Diet Coke, now it's sweet tea. When, oh when, will I ever learn???? STICK TO WATER AT BEDTIME, DUMM KOPP!!!!!!!!!!

How to revive a fish...

This is just SO wrong. LOL

Rant

Ever been around someone who doesn't want to listen to you? You know, the people who want you to listen to everything they have to say but can't be bothered? The ones who cut you off in the middle of your conversation and that's it? The people who make you feel small and insignificant in the whole scheme of things? That make you feel like a piece of gum on the sole of the shoe of life? Let me tell you - if you never have, consider yourself fortunate. People like that just burn my biscuits.

Sad part about it all is that sometimes it's impossible to distance yourself from those who make you feel that way. The things that have transpired in my 37 years of living have helped me to at least try to listen to others. I like to find out what makes them tick. Some things I don't want to hear about, especially if it's something that offends my sensibility or if it's the fifty-leven-millionth time we've gone over the same old, same old. If there's something going on in your life that you can change and you're not willing to make the effort to change it, don't come complain to me and expect me to listen. Uh-uh. Not gonna go there.

But being in this house with three children and no real means of transport unless my honey is at home, and even then not really having anywhere to go during the day besides shopping (which I hate), it does get old from time to time. Sometimes I just want to talk and be heard. Not lectured, not fussed at, not criticized and critiqued, just heard. A little compassion, a little empathy for the way I feel. Don't tell me what I need to do or not do. Just listen. I'm already short enough, so I really don't need to be cut off at the knees when I'm simply wanting to talk. I'm sure that you SAHW/SAHM's out there can identify.

This has been frustrating me for quite a while now and it's simply come to the point that I feel the need to express myself. Now back to our regulary scheduled levity...

What's in a dream?

Do you ever have a weird dream and then you wake up and it's become a physical thing??? For instance, some years ago when I was working 70 or so hours a week with a man who was developmentally disabled, I had a dream that I was defending him from some guys who were trying to abuse him. I swung my fist, and to my surprise, I made contact with Peter's head!! I had hit him right between his eyes!!! What a rude awakening for both of us!

So this past week has been a bit rough, sleep-wise. Being able to go to sleep and stay asleep long enough to get rested has seemingly been impossible. Not to mention that whatever's going on in my daytime life sometimes carries on to my dreams. I knew the girls were coming this morning, so somehow I was dreaming about bad children. Dunno why, because the girls are pretty good most of the time. But anyway, in my dreams, they'd been playing in mud and then had somehow opened the gate from the backyard and were heading toward the road.

Then somehow I came up with a little boy to keep too. He did something really, really bad and as I was spanking him for being so naughty, I was woken up by the feeling of solid flesh under my hand! It just so happened that Peter actually got to spend the night at home last night, and much to both of our surprise, his shoulder became the perfect substiture for a fat little kid's thigh in my dream. LOL

We both got so tickled, and the more one of us would giggle, the more the other one of us would giggle. It was infectious, and although I had slapped him and woken us up, it was so funny and relaxing to wake up laughing instead of him being upset with me. So now I have had a fun beginning for the day and every single time I think about it, I start giggling again.
